Ai Weiwei: Trace at Hirshhorn

Ai Weiwei has been proclaimed as one of China's most controversial artist. He uses multiple mediums in his artwork to promote human rights, freedom and expression for all.

Ai Weiwei discussed state corruption and cover ups on his blog which in turn led to frustration by his government. In 2011 he was incarcerated by the Chinese government and interrogated endlessly for his outspoken nature.

He still finds it to be a mystery as to why he was released due to the detainment of his lawyers, friends and associates. As of now, Weiwei is banned from the Chinese internet with not even his name being allowed to appear on it. Because of this, Ai Weiwei switched over to twitter and instagram which he credits with  getting him more familiar with current issues and politics. He speaks highly of the platforms saying they "empower individuals to knowledge and independent communication with others."

In the dynamic installation Trace, Ai Weiwei uses legos as the medium to create amazing portraits. He uses legos because of their disarming nature, as well as, their ease of creation and destruction capability, much like freedom itself. Although at first glance it simply appears to be a myriad of finely orchestrated pieces, the colors are actually used to reflect the cultural background of the prisoner.

It is Weiwei's belief that the people depicted in his installation are heroes of our time and deserve a very strong image to be remembered and to be exhibited.

Do you believe that people who stand up for change should accused of treason or celebrated for being the people's champ?

How can these governments and citizens work together to create a better more peaceful world for the future generations?

Gordon Parks | A Harlem Family 1968

In 1968 famous photographer Gordon Parks produced a series of shocking photos chronicling the life of a Harlem family plagued by hard times. Parks set out to showcase an intimate look at what causes so much chaos in inner cities and the people who are directly effected by it. The Fontenelle family, Park's subjects, were essentially an attempt to shed understanding on a basic truth that families across America were trying to sustain a life for their families. During the month that Parks stayed with the Fontenelles, he was exposed to fights, domestic abuse, extreme poverty and the bond that held it all together. Bessie Fontenelle holding her son Richard after being beaten by her Husband in a drunken rage.           After this photo essay was published, readers of Life contributed so much that the family was able to get a new home and even employment for the Norman Fontenelle, the father. Unfortunately a house fire killed ...

The Metropolitan Museum of Art- New York, NY

The Met, as in, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a monster of a museum. It houses some of the most famed artists and artifacts throughout centuries of human history. On one end you can learn about the mummification process in ancient Egypt and at the other, you can be standing in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The various escapes to different genres of life provides visitors with enough information to settle any curiosities. At this point, I've been able to lay eyes on some of the best museums in the world and The Met just evokes that "Major Alert!" feel. Some museums have quaint cosy vibes, and others pure, simple and fresh, but then the are the "Other, others" which houses more than anything else, visitors.      If you love art and care deeply about all of its nuances, it may be important to try to feel the space around you, and even think of the history of the person who made what's in front of you. But often times in the major museums,...
